Our Heritage
The Lowell Church of Christ has enjoyed a long and colorful history through its years of service in southern Lake County, Indiana. The journey officially began in March of 1842 when seven individuals met for worship in a home three miles south of Lowell. In the years leading up to the Civil War, lots for a new building were purchased in town.
In 1869, a horse drawn boat hauled the first load of stone to be used in the construction of a beautiful new brick building. One individual, who mortgaged 40 acres of his own farmland to help pay off the $4,000 debt, summed up the sentiment of the congregation:
"I have great reasons to believe that the Lord has greatly blessed me... and have enjoyed more happiness than would balance all the trials."By 1914, the church was once again ready to build. A 40 x 60 foot addition was added to the sanctuary, along with a newly designed bell tower. Perhaps the most memorable addition to the building was the inclusion of new stained glass windows, including the beautiful depiction of "Christ the Good Shepherd."
On April 7, 1956, the congregation dedicated a brand new education wing to the existing structure. The old facilities would eventually serve the community for over 100 years before being torn down.
On April 29, 1977, members of the Lowell Church of Christ dedicated a brand new 14,000 square foot worship facility to the glory of God. With this dedication came a renewed commitment to reaching a lost generation for Jesus. Since 1977 many changes have been made to the building to help accommodate the growing needs of both the congregation and the community it serves. The building remains a dynamic tool in the ongoing ministry of the Lowell Church of Christ.
2012 will mark the 170th anniversary of the existence of the Lowell Church of Christ. What better way to honor the many years of faithful service to our community than to move forward in faith with a building expansion designed to reach more people with the love of Jesus. It is our prayer that this new addition will be instrumental in allowing us to become a church of mature followers of Jesus Christ who will

Our Vision
Almost forty years ago, a core group of believers held firmly to a vision that God was ready to do big things through the Lowell Church of Christ. In some ways it was a difficult vision to grasp because it involved relinquishing a building that had been filled with more than a hundred years of memories. Yet, with a God given determination, the vision that included a brand new facility slowly began to emerge. The rest, so to speak, is history.
We would be remiss to suggest that God's vision for the church is about buildings. The truth is that God's real passion is for the lost. God sent his son into the world not to build buildings but to save the lost. Because people are God's passion, this must be our passion as well. Since 1978, our current building has been an incredible tool in helping accomplish God's vision for reaching the lost.
We stand once again on the doorstep of a new chapter in our long history. God has been preparing us for this moment. An expanding children's and youth ministry has necessitated space that is simply not available to us in our present building. To address this need, we are planning a two phase building program that will provide us with the space we need to continue a dynamic, growing ministry to young families. The first phase of this program will consist of an 8,000 square foot education wing that will be dedicated to children's ministry occurring on both Sunday mornings and throughout the week. We envision a place where children and youth can gather in a safe environment and be taught the life transforming message of Jesus Christ.
Our leadership is convinced that with God's blessing this vision will become a reality. Paul reminds us that we serve a God who 'is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.'
